The ABC/R (Augmented Bolt Catch/Release, Forged) with its angled and larger top paddle and lower paddle with increased surface area, is purpose-designed for use with AR15/M16 receivers equipped with ambidextrous magazine releases. Specifically, it is designed to address the difficulty with accessing the factory bolt catch's lower paddle with an ambidextrous magazine catch, such as Norgon's Ambi-Catch, on the receiver. Many of the ambidextrous mag release's lower paddle is on the same vertical plane as the factory bolt catch lower paddle, making identification difficult by feel, especially with a gloved hand.

The ABC/R's chief effort is focused on that single issue. The lower paddle protrudes further, and is angled at 10 degree to give it even more surface area. These measures put the lower paddle and Ambi-Catch's paddle on different vertical planes. That done, Forward Controls went to work on the top paddle, making the ABC/R's top paddle slightly larger and angled for easier and faster access.

The notch immediately above the ABC/R’s lower paddle isn’t there by accident. As you run your finger down the bolt catch towards the lower paddle, the notch is meant to provide tactile feedback to indicate the beginning of the lower paddle. It is important be able to differentiate one control surface from another, all without diverting one's gaze to it. The ABC/R-F's weight (0.445 oz) has been kept close to that of the factory bolt catch (0.401 oz) to avoid over-tasking the spring.

Made from forged 8620 stainless steel and black oxide coated, the ABC/R is proudly designed and made in the USA
. Roll pin not included.

Frequently Asked Question: What is the difference between the billet model and this (forged) model?

Answer: Both models (billet and forged) are identical in looks and functionality, however, the forged model has sharper serrations and is much stronger than the billet model. The Forward Controls Design Bolt Catch is the only bolt catch on the market made from a forging as all others are either billet or metal injection molded, which is what makes FCD's forged model so unique.

Improvement over stock bolt catch

This is a high quality upgrade over a standard bolt catch if you are looking for something with a slightly larger larger surface area. It fits well, especially with the flatter contours of my billet receiver. The only downside is that I really think they should include a bolt catch pin with these, considering the price, as I don't like reusing roll pins.

Forward Controls Design Augmented Bolt Catch / Release For AR15 Style 5.56/.223 Rifles

I am very pleased with this product. It fit great and looks more aesthetic pleasing on the BAD LW lower receiver than the Seekins Precision bolt catch that it replaced. It compliments the NORGON ambi-catch magazine release very well. Also, very fast delivery. Great product and great customer service.

Nice Product

I purchased 2 of these one for a 300 Blackout SBR and another for a future build. I really like the larger surface area. The fit and finish were spot on, works like a charm.

For My AR-9 Pistol

I needed to replace my broken bolt catch for my recent build of my AR-9MM pistol. I read where the bolt catch was a weak link in the reliability of the system, with broken ones being common. Not wanting to have this occur in the field, I searched for the strongest one I could find at a reasonable price. The forged unit seemed like it would fit my need. It installed easily on my dedicated lower. I function tested it at home and then went to the range. My LRBHO feature of my dedicated lower did not function, but the bolt catch remained strong through the actual fire testing. I inspected it at home again after firing about 40 rounds of two different loads of 9MM; there was a very small gouge in the top where the bolt must have hit it. I was able to adjust the wire for the LRBHO feature on my lower and now this latch works with that feature with my hand cycling at least. It does have a nice tactile design...easy to push on or off in function. It was not too large to fit easily into my lower. It does not protrude out more than stock issue latches. I will continue to test this with trips to the range to see how it holds up to the abuse of the 9MM set up. The price is reasonable so I feel this is a product I can recommend.
