Forward Controls Design Augmented Bolt Catch / Release V3 For AR15 Style 5.56/.223 Rifles - Serrated Lines

The ABC/R (Augmented Bolt Catch/Release) with its angled and larger top paddle and lower paddle with increased surface area, is purpose designed for use with AR15 / M16 receivers equipped with ambidextrous magazine releases. Specifically, it is designed to address the difficulty with accessing the factory bolt catch lower paddle with an ambidextrous magazine catch, such as the Norgon Ambi Catch, on the receiver. Many of the ambidextrous mag release's lower paddle is on the same vertical plane as the factory bolt catch lower paddle, making identification difficult by feel, especially with a gloved hand.

The main benefit of the ABC/R is focused on that single issue. The lower paddle protrudes further, and is angled at 10 degree to give it even more surface area. These measures put the lower paddle and Ambi Catch paddle on different vertical planes. Then Forward Controls Design worked on the top paddle making it larger and gave it a 5 degree angle at the lower 50%, and 10 degree angle at the upper 50% cant. The angled paddle makes it easier for the palm or thumb to access.

The notch immediately above the lower paddle is not there by accident. As you run your finger down the bolt catch towards the lower paddle, the notch is meant to provide tactile feedback to indicate the beginning of the lower paddle. It is important be able to differentiate one control surface from another, all without diverting your eyes to it.

For 2020 ABC/R version 3 consists of the following changes:
- Ledge on top of the upper paddle, and bottom of the lower paddle to increase traction.
- Upper paddle options: FB (forward biased), standard (centered upper paddle), RB (rearward biased).
- Butterfly lower paddle with increased surface area, while maintaining a healthy standoff distance from the lever of most ambidextrous magazine catches.

ABC/R v3 upper paddle options accommodate individual users reloading technique. Upper paddle options include FB (forward biased), standard (centered, non-biased), and RB (rearward biased):
- FB (forward biased) is for right hand users that wrap their left hand around the magazine well, and use their left thumb to press the upper paddle of the bolt catch. The FB version has the upper paddle shifted to the muzzle end to facilitate this reloading method.
- Standard (non biased) upper paddle remains the same position as v1 and v2 ABC/R, its upper paddle is not biased towards the front or rear.
- RB (rearward biased) is for left hand users that use their extended left index finger to access the bolt catch paddles. The RB version has the upper paddle shifted to the butt stock end to make the upper paddle more accessible.

The horizontal extension of the lower paddle increases the surface area of the lower paddle, but stops short of reaching the bottom of the bolt catch in order to create a stand off distance between the extension and the lever of an ambidextrous magazine catch. It is Forward Controls Designs opinion and observation that close proximity of two control surfaces is best avoided. The butterfly lower paddle has increased surface area, and does not interfere with the lever of an ambi mag catch.

Machined from billet 8620 alloy steel and heat treated with a black finish. Please note the ABC/R is not designed for use on 9mm receivers that use Colt 9mm magazines which require a Colt 9mm bolt catch, or Armalite AR10B receivers. The ABC/R v3 is proudly designed and made in the USA.

Great product.

Probably my favorite item from FCD. I have versions 1 & 2 on previous builds and now have version 3 forward bias on newest "Recce" build using an AO Precision M4E1 lower receiver. The only non-mil spec bolt catch I will use after trying others. This forward bias is version is perfect.

Simple designs are often the best...

Big fan of FCD and this is no exception. Oozes quality when you pick it up, simple design and flawless function & durability. I have tried many others, (BAD, Geissele, Strike, etc) and FCD keeps me coming back for more! This build was a JL billet lower and an LWRC piston upper.

FCD hit it out of the park with this bolt catch. I've tried several aftermarket bolt catches but none with the functionality, fit and finish, and aesthetics of this one. I had to buy one for each of my rifles. You can't go wrong with Forward Controls Designs. For those that don't know, the company was started by Battle Arms Developments of BAD lever fame ex-frontman Roger Wang. These are serious, better than mil-spec parts for people who are serious about their rifles. I recommend all of their products. You will not be disappointed.

Excellent upgrade. Just big and tactile enough to help speed reloads and malfunction clearances, without being so large that it catches on gear or interferes with other operations. Currently using it on all my AR’s, including personal builds and a Sons Of Liberty Gun Works carbine.

Nice Product

I purchased 2 of these one for a 300 Blackout SBR and another for a future build. I really like the larger surface area. The fit and finish were spot on, works like a charm.
